In response to what we’re learning about God…who He is, what He has done in our lives, is doing, and will do, we come to worship Him. Worship is a natural response of a heart that is filled with the fear of the Lord, that joy awe and reverence for God.
As we are filled with His truth, as revealed in His word, we naturally want to express that truth in our areas of influence like our families, relationships, careers, churches, and others.
Worship is defined as the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity as defined by dictionary.com. Noah Webster’s dictionary defines it this way: to adore; to pay divine honors to; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration.
I like to think of it this way, as I get to know my husband, his personality, his quirks, his thoughts, everything about him and just doing life with him, it makes me love him more and more. All of this fills me with love for my husband that it compels me to DO, SAY, or GIVE something to him that expresses that love.
In the same way, the more we know about God and do life with Him, the more we want to express our love to Him through worshiping and praising Him…doing things that honor Him, and giving in ways that are acceptable to Him. That expression of our faith and love in Him stems from us getting to know the Father and walking in His ways.
As a worship leader for many years, I have come to understand that worship is not just something we do on when we go to church nor is it limited to just singing songs. Worship is a lifestyle. Our lives as Christians are ones that should be on this continual journey of becoming more like Christ and putting to death anything that is out of line with that mission.
Through our dedication to Him and perseverance in dying to our flesh in order to become more Christ-like, the expression of our faith just pours out of us and people will begin to see the love we have for God and see the change in us. They will want to know the reason for this change and love pouring out of us.
