The past two weeks my husband and I have had, what I call, a spiritual date. I call it a spiritual date because we set a day to purposely pray about what is on our hearts and listen for God’s response about the matter at hand. We have been inundated with so many things in life as a couple that we need to figure out…schooling for one of our children, our church, our health, and especially our finances. We just need to hear what God wants us to do and what He wants to say about the matter…together.
Recently we went to a day conference put on by The Barnabas group call a Day Apart. It’s a day long conference where pastor’s, their wives, and staff or other ministry leaders go to worship together and hear from speakers. The main point of the day is to have time to spend hearing from God for a few hours in whatever it is you are needing…the key being to spend time in His presence away from all the hustle and bustle of ministry (my husband is the rector of our church) and family obligations.
You will see each person getting away to a different location in the meeting hall, going outside taking a walk, sitting by the river, or wherever else they may find to be alone with God. We’ve attended this conference since it started last year. Last year we felt God telling us to spend time with Him together. Last year, we didn’t do so well with this. Sure, we prayed together at times last year but we didn’t make it a priority. The theme is the same this year and even more so. There’s an urgency we both feel to pray together.
We decided to make it a point every Monday, since February 26, 2024, to meet with him together to pray about our finances and anything else that comes up. We figured we would go somewhere after dropping our son off at school to pray.
So far, we’ve shared our hearts, our dreams, things the Lord has shown us individually, confessed and repented together, prayed, and just sat quietly listening for what God had to say to us then sharing what we got. It’s been fun and so needed! Having time with God individually is just as important and having time with Him as a couple; it makes the time together that much sweeter when we can come together and share what the Lord has spoken to us as individuals and see how He is working it out for us as a couple.
Though we are praying about what steps to take as a couple, the one thing that is constant right now is that He wants us to continue praying and meeting with Him…together!
