Everyone Has 2 Purposes

As I studied for my class, it was clear to me that everyone has two main purposes.  The first, which I am calling the Primary Purpose, relates to our fear of God.  This involves being a follower of Jesus, worshipping Him, and living through the standards that God has set in His holy word.

Primary Purpose

I call this the Primary Purpose because God is the one who created us and therefore should have our utmost allegiance above anything else.  Matthew 6:33 (ESV) states,

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Even the Ten Commandments reveal that God needs to have primary residence in our lives in the way they are ordered.  The first four commandments deal with how we relate to God and the rest deal with how we relate to our fellow man.

Everyone in the world is to fear God.  However, as believers we know not everyone puts their faith in God.  John 3:16 states (ESV),

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Follow that with John 17:3 (ESV) which states,

And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

To have eternal life you have to know God AND Jesus Christ.  It is also important to know from these scriptures too that God desires everyone to have eternal life with Him and not perish for all of eternity.  That is why He sent Jesus.

Everyone was born into sin.  Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross so we wouldn’t die in our sins.  For this reason it stands that He alone should take priority in our lives.   The caveat is that we have to choose to know God through Jesus by first

  • accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior and then
  • living according to God’s standard of living.

Secondary Purpose

The second purpose deals with how we serve our fellow man.  I call this the Secondary Purpose and this is what everyone wants to know.  It’s where the question of “what am I called to do?” resides.

Most times people often skip the Primary Purpose and jump straight into the Secondary Purpose.  However, there is often confusion, lack of eternal fulfillment, and joy when God is not at the forefront of our life’s pursuits.

We have to get our focus and priorities in line if we want to work on fulfilling the purpose God has on our lives and not waste time.  Time is of the essence but we have to lay a foundation built on the rock of Jesus if we are to build anything of eternal value.

Before we begin to lay the foundation, on Friday I will touch on something that is very important to discuss.  I hope you will join me.
