Recently I have been feeling connected to God…but that hasn’t always been the case. Even as a pastor’s wife I would let my schedule for work, my family, and my church get in the way of truly connecting with God. There is nothing wrong with me giving of my time to these things because He wants me to honor Him in all of those areas. However the problem comes when those things make me lose sight of what is truly important…a relationship with Him.
Here’s the problem. How can I honor God if I don’t know how? How can I do my best for Him if I am not connected to Him? Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5
There are three main ways for us to stay connect to God. They are simple yet profound. The key however is to do them daily and diligently.
Read the Bible
This should go without saying. The Bible is God’s holy word and the main form of communication to His people. If we want to know who God is and what He likes or dislikes we can read about it. I am not solo scriptora because God also uses the Holy Spirit to illumine His word to us and He uses His saints to speak life to us. However, EVERYTHING needs to fall in line with the scriptures.
So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. (Matthew 7:24)
Pray
Praying for me is akin to having a conversation with my husband. Just as I can pour out my heart whether it is in a state of pain, sadness, joy, fear, etc to him it is the same with expressing those same emotions to my King. Not only can I share those emotions to Him but I can also express my gratefulness and adoration of who He is. He loves it when His children come to Him.
“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. ~Matthew 6:6
Worship
Look at one of Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definitions of worship:
To adore; to pay divine honors to; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration.
So for me, according to the definition, worship of God is to encompass every part of my life. It goes beyond just singing a couple of songs on Sunday though singing is an expression of worship. For me worship is a lifestyle. It is asking the questions of am I adoring, honoring, and respecting God with my body? Am i adoring, honoring, and respecting God with my mind? How about the way I treat others? If not I need to ask God how He wants me to adore, honor, and respect Him in that area. It is saying, “God I AM nothing without You, I can DO nothing without You.”
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. ~Romans 12:1-2
You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. ~Revelation 4:11
Which of these areas do you struggle in forming a daily habit and connecting with God?
